You spent good money on your website. It looks professional. The photos are nice. The colours match your brand. So why isn’t anyone getting in touch?
This is one of the most common frustrations we hear from small business owners. They’ve done the right thing — invested in a website — but it’s not delivering results. The phone doesn’t ring. The contact form sits empty. And they can’t figure out what’s wrong because, on the surface, everything looks fine.
The problem is almost never how the site looks. It’s what the site says — and how it guides people toward taking action.
The Pretty Website Trap
There’s a widespread belief that a great-looking website equals a great website. Designers love beautiful layouts, fancy animations, and creative typography. And there’s nothing wrong with any of that — as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of clarity.
The truth is, your visitors aren’t there to admire your website. They’re there because they have a problem and they want to know if you can solve it. If your website prioritises looking impressive over being clear, you’ve already lost.
Think about the last time you needed a plumber, a solicitor, or a mechanic. Did you care whether their website had parallax scrolling? Or did you just want to know what they do, where they are, and how to contact them?
The Real Reasons Your Site Isn’t Converting
Your headline doesn’t say what you do
The most important piece of text on your website is the main headline on your homepage. If it says something vague like “Excellence in Everything We Do” or “Your Partner in Success,” a visitor has no idea what your business actually offers.
You have about five seconds before someone decides to stay or leave. Use that time wisely with a headline that clearly states what you do and who you help.
There’s no clear next step
Every page on your website should answer one question for the visitor: “What do I do next?” If you don’t tell them, they’ll do nothing.
This means having a clear, visible call to action on every page. Not hidden at the bottom. Not buried in the navigation. Front and centre, in plain language. “Get a Free Quote,” “Book a Call,” “Send Us a Message.”
You’re talking about yourself instead of your customer
Compare these two approaches:
About you: “We have 15 years of experience delivering bespoke solutions across multiple sectors with a commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.”
About your customer: “You’re busy running your business. You don’t have time to deal with a website that isn’t working. We’ll sort it for you — no jargon, no hassle.”
The second one connects because it speaks directly to what the reader is feeling. The first one is generic corporate language that could apply to any business in any industry.
Your site is slow
A beautiful website that takes six seconds to load is worse than an average website that loads in two. People won’t wait. They’ll press back and try the next result on Google.
Speed is especially critical on mobile, where connections can be slower. Every extra second of load time increases the chance someone leaves without ever seeing your content.
You have no social proof
When someone lands on your website for the first time, they don’t trust you yet. That’s normal. Testimonials, reviews, case studies, and examples of your work help build that trust.
If your website has no evidence that you’ve helped real people with real problems, visitors have no reason to believe you’ll help them.
It’s Not About Design — It’s About Messaging
The websites that generate the most enquiries aren’t necessarily the best-looking ones. They’re the clearest ones. They immediately tell you what the business does, who it helps, and what to do next.
Good design supports good messaging. It doesn’t replace it.
If your website looks professional but isn’t generating enquiries, the fix usually isn’t a redesign — it’s a rewrite. Get the message right and the results will follow.
