Most business websites make the same mistake. They talk about themselves.
“We were founded in 2005.” “We’re passionate about delivering excellence.” “Our team has over 50 years of combined experience.”
None of that is wrong, exactly. But none of it answers the question your potential customer is actually asking: “Can you solve my problem?”
StoryBrand is a framework that fixes this. It changes the way you write and structure your website so that your customer — not your business — is at the centre of the story. And when you get this right, the results are dramatic.
The Core Idea
StoryBrand was created by Donald Miller, and it’s based on a simple insight: human beings are wired to pay attention to stories. Every great story follows the same pattern, and that pattern works just as well on a website as it does in a film.
Here’s the structure:
A character (your customer) has a problem. They meet a guide (your business) who gives them a plan and calls them to action. That action either ends in success or helps them avoid failure.
That’s it. Seven elements. And when your website follows this pattern, it becomes dramatically clearer and more persuasive.
Why It Works
Think about any film you love. The hero has a problem. They meet someone who helps them. They follow a plan. They win.
Luke Skywalker had the Empire. Obi-Wan was his guide. The plan was to trust the Force. The result was saving the galaxy.
Now think about your customer. They have a problem — maybe their website isn’t generating enquiries, or their kitchen needs renovating, or their accounts are a mess. They need a guide — someone who understands their problem and knows how to fix it. They need a plan — clear steps to follow. And they need to know what happens if they act (success) and what happens if they don’t (failure).
This works because it puts the customer in a story they recognise. They immediately see themselves in it. And when people see themselves in your messaging, they pay attention.
The Mistake Most Websites Make
Most businesses position themselves as the hero of their own story. “We’re the best.” “We deliver excellence.” “We’ve been doing this for 20 years.”
The problem is, your customer doesn’t need another hero. They need a guide. They already see themselves as the hero of their own story — they have a problem and they’re looking for someone to help them solve it.
When you position your business as the guide instead of the hero, everything changes. Instead of boasting about yourself, you demonstrate that you understand your customer’s problem and have a clear path to solving it.
How StoryBrand Looks on a Website
Let’s make this practical. Here’s what each section of a StoryBrand website typically looks like:
The header (above the fold): A clear headline that states what you offer and how it helps. A subheadline that expands on it. A call-to-action button. An image that shows the aspirational outcome. This should answer three questions within five seconds: What do you offer? How does it make my life better? How do I get it?
The problem section: Acknowledge the frustration, confusion, or challenge your customer faces. This shows empathy — you understand what they’re going through before you start selling.
The guide section: Position yourself as the expert who can help. This is where your credentials, experience, and testimonials belong — but framed as evidence that you can guide them to success, not as self-promotion.
The plan: Give them clear, simple steps. Usually three. “1. Get in touch. 2. We’ll build your website. 3. Start getting more customers.” This reduces anxiety because it shows the process is straightforward.
The call to action: Tell them exactly what to do next. “Book a Call.” “Get a Free Quote.” “Send Us a Message.” Be direct. Being vague about what you want people to do is the easiest way to lose them.
The stakes: Show what success looks like (the positive outcome of working with you) and what failure looks like (the cost of doing nothing). This creates both aspiration and urgency.
A Real Example
Here’s how two versions of the same message land differently.
Without StoryBrand: “Welcome to ABC Web Design. We are a full-service digital agency with over 15 years of experience creating bespoke websites for businesses of all sizes. Our team of passionate professionals is committed to delivering exceptional results.”
With StoryBrand: “Your website should be bringing in customers — not sitting there collecting dust. We build websites for small businesses that are clear, professional, and designed to generate enquiries. Here’s how it works: 1. Tell us about your business. 2. We build your site. 3. Watch the enquiries come in.”
The second version is about the customer. It acknowledges their problem, offers a solution, and gives a clear plan. The first version is about the business — and the customer has already scrolled past it.
Does It Actually Work?
Yes. Businesses that implement StoryBrand messaging consistently report significant increases in engagement, time on site, and conversions. Not because the framework is magic, but because clarity always outperforms cleverness.
When people understand what you do and how you can help them within seconds of landing on your website, they’re far more likely to take the next step.
You Don’t Need to Read the Book
The StoryBrand framework is straightforward enough that a good web designer can implement it for you. You don’t need to become a messaging expert — you just need someone who understands the framework and can apply it to your business.
When we build websites, StoryBrand principles are baked into every page. The result is a site that doesn’t just look good — it communicates clearly and moves visitors toward getting in touch.
If your current website talks more about you than your customer, it might be time for a conversation about changing that.
