Web Design
If you’re a plumber, electrician, builder, joiner, roofer, or any kind of tradesperson working in North Yorkshire, chances are most of your work comes through word of mouth. And that’s brilliant — it means you’re doing good work and people recommend you.
But here’s the problem: word of mouth has a ceiling. There are only so many people in your existing network. And when someone does get your name from a friend, the first thing they do is Google you.
What do they find?
This is the most common response we hear from tradespeople, and it makes sense on the surface. If the diary’s full, why bother?
Three reasons.
First, you’re leaving money on the table. People are searching for your services right now in your area. “Plumber Thirsk.” “Electrician Helmsley.” “Roofer near Easingwold.” If you’re not showing up, those jobs are going to someone else — someone who might not be as good as you, but who bothered to get online.
Second, being busy now doesn’t mean being busy forever. Work comes in waves. Having a website that generates a steady stream of enquiries means you’re never relying entirely on the phone ringing at the right time.
Third, a website lets you choose your work. When you have more enquiries than you can handle, you can pick the better jobs — the ones closer to home, the more profitable ones, the ones you actually enjoy doing. That’s not possible when you’re taking whatever comes through the door.
Picture this: a homeowner in Ampleforth needs their boiler serviced. Their neighbour says “call Dave, he’s brilliant.” So they Google “Dave plumbing Ampleforth.”
If Dave has a professional website, it confirms everything the neighbour said. It shows his services, his area, his contact details, maybe a few reviews from happy customers. The homeowner thinks “looks good” and picks up the phone.
If Dave has no website — or worse, a half-finished one from 2018 with a placeholder phone number — the homeowner hesitates. They might still call. But they might also think “let me check who else is around” and end up going with someone who looked more professional online.
Your website doesn’t need to be fancy. It just needs to exist, look professional, and make it easy for someone to get in touch.
Forget the bells and whistles. Here’s what actually matters:
A clear statement of what you do and where you work. “Qualified electrician serving Thirsk, Helmsley, Easingwold and surrounding areas.” That’s it. Simple. Effective. And exactly what Google needs to rank you for local searches.
Your phone number — visible on every page. When someone needs a tradesperson, they want to call. Don’t make them hunt for your number. Put it in the header where they can tap it on their phone.
A few photos of your work. They don’t need to be professional photography. Phone photos of completed jobs work fine. Before and after shots are gold. They prove you do what you say you do.
Reviews from real customers. Even three or four genuine testimonials make a massive difference. They build trust with people who’ve never met you. Ask your best customers if they’d mind writing a couple of sentences — most will be happy to.
Your service area. List the towns and villages you cover. This helps Google show you in local searches for those areas. “We cover Ampleforth, Thirsk, Helmsley, Easingwold, Malton, Ripon, and surrounding villages across North Yorkshire.”
A simple way to get in touch. Phone number, email, and a short contact form. That’s all you need.
You don’t need to be good with computers to have a website. You just need someone to build it for you.
A good web designer handles everything — the design, the content, the technical setup, the hosting, all of it. Your job is to turn up for a conversation about your business, approve the design, and then get back to doing what you’re good at.
You wouldn’t expect your customers to fit their own boiler. Don’t expect yourself to build your own website.
Let’s do some quick maths. Say the average job for a tradesperson in North Yorkshire is worth £300. A professional website costs roughly £1,000. If that website brings in just four extra jobs in its first year — less than one every three months — it’s paid for itself entirely.
In reality, a well-built website with proper local SEO will bring in significantly more than that, month after month, year after year. It’s the one marketing investment that actually compounds over time.
You don’t need to write anything. You don’t need to take professional photos. You don’t need to understand SEO or hosting or any of it.
